# Where trading is available

> Why some readers see odds only, and how the widget decides whether trading is available.

Polymarket restricts trading in some countries and regions. Before showing any trade controls, the widget asks Polymarket's geoblock service whether trading is allowed for the reader's connection.

| Result | What the reader sees |
| - | - |
| Allowed | Odds plus trade controls |
| Blocked | "Trading on Polymarket isn't available in your region. You can still follow the odds here." |
| Check couldn't complete | "We couldn't confirm trading is available where you are, so trading is turned off." |

PolyEmbed's [Terms of Service](https://polyembed.io/terms) also don't permit trading by US persons or persons in other restricted jurisdictions, even where the region check passes. You must be 18 or older to trade.

In every case, readers can still see the market's odds and follow the link to Polymarket.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Don't use a VPN or other tools to get around regional restrictions. Polymarket's terms prohibit it, and PolyEmbed doesn't support it. See [Polymarket's Terms of Use](https://polymarket.com/tos).

## Trading can also be off when

* Trading is turned off for the platform, for example during maintenance. The widget then shows odds only.
* The market isn't accepting orders, for example just before resolution.
* The outcome can't be traded from the widget. Open the market on Polymarket instead.

For Polymarket's current list of restricted regions, see [Polymarket's documentation](https://docs.polymarket.com).
